Legislative and Regulatory Basis for Radiation Protection in Saudi Arabia

Abstract

The use of radiation technology in the Kingdom goes back to the early 1960s and was used mainly in oil and gas exploration activities, supervised by the Ministry of Petroleum. During the last two decades, the use of Radiation applications grew in different fields, including medical applications. Accordingly, the Kingdom in 2018 established the legislative frameworks for nuclear and radiation activities. Besides, the kingdom established the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission (NRRC) as an independent government body mandated for regulating all nuclear and radiological activities. This presentation will provide an overview of national legislation and regulations for radiation protection. Also, a glance at NRRC's current activities.

Speaker’s Bio: 

Mohammad Farran is an acting manager in the regulatory operations general department, working for the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission. He has extensive experience in establishing the legislative and regulatory frameworks, he was the project manager for developing the set of nuclear laws that have been approved and enacted in March 2018. After that Mohammad was leading the project for developing the regulatory regulations and requirements. He also headed the international relations department and played a key role in establishing strategic collaborations with similar international regulators and maintain communication with the International Atomic Energy Agency to ensuring the following and adoption of international best practices within national regulatory procedures.
